“RTC 6 opened their league season with a home win over MCC 4, but not without a struggle. The No 2 players were first out of the gate, with Tom Cameron losing a tight opening set 6/5 before bouncing back to take control of the second set and he carried that momentum into an abbreviated third set (starting at 3/3) to complete a fine win.
Nicola Cavill looked set to continue her recent winning run as she imposed herself over Nick Warner in a 6/3 first set. In a high-quality second set, Nicola had a couple of match points at 5/4, 40-15 – but the visiting skipper was a determined man, and he scrapped his way back to level the match at one set all. By this point he was enjoying the battle and Nicola was beginning to succumb to her ‘man flu’, and waltzed through three quick games in the decider.
So it was all down to the final match. A dramatic finale was not part of Paul Wright’s plans, however, as he remorselessly steamrollered Roger Cotton in quick time, 6/1 6/0, catching the eye with several pleasing backhands to the base of the tambour.
A successful start for RTC 6 – on to Holyport next weekend.”
